AC Remote Not Working? A Simple Troubleshooting Guide

Check batteries, infrared output, settings and compatibility before replacing an air-conditioner remote.

Replace and check the batteries

Use a fresh pair of the correct batteries and confirm the positive and negative ends match the markings inside the compartment. Clean lightly tarnished contacts with a dry cloth and make sure the batteries fit firmly.

Test the infrared signal

Open the camera on a mobile phone, point the remote's front transmitter at the camera and press a button. Many infrared remotes show a flashing light through the phone screen. If there is no flash with fresh batteries, the remote may be faulty. Some phone cameras filter infrared light, so try the front camera or another phone if needed.

Check the AC unit

Make sure the indoor unit has power and that nothing blocks its receiver window. Try the manual power button on the unit if available. If the unit also fails manually, the issue may not be the remote.

Confirm compatibility

Universal AC remotes can require pairing or code search, while many brand-specific replacements work immediately. Check the supplied instructions and confirm that the remote is intended for your AC model before concluding that it is defective.
